TW Walsh: Pawn Shop Guns

October 19, 2012

about the video:

There’s some really brutal writing throughout Songs of Pain and Leisure, particularly regarding relationships – our relationship to others, to the objects we surround ourselves with, and to American culture at large. I was hoping to depict that connection and disconnection, visually, with “Pawn Shop Guns.” The kernel of the idea was a person’s head singing the song, in real-time, with the body doing everyday things (e.g. drinking with friends, playing with a gun, doing chores, etc.) in time-lapse. The result would hopefully be a kind of optical disconnect. We did some test shooting and while we were happy with the way the footage looked, the feasibility of doing multiple, 3-5 hour, non-stop shots presented a big challenge. So we searched for other ways to detach the body, to give the whole video a time-lapse feel without the restrictions of shooting in time-lapse. What we settled on is a technique called frame blending, which removes certain frames and then “fills in the blanks” while allowing us to shoot in real-time. The end result – which utilizes remapped footage, frame blending, and over crank variations with some color grading, light leaks, and film burns – evolved quite a bit but still expresses, hopefully, the core of that original idea.

My finding of the Galassi Brothers is a trophy etched with fortune, oddity, beauty, and space.  Hailing from just outside Petersburg, Illinois, these two Otherworld siblings and I diligently forged a friendship unbreakable by many large bears. In the Fall of 2004 I was in our attic, looking through a box of pride, when I found their heads.  I posted two different listings in the Greensheet for their bodies, carefully jarring and preserving the heads in a concoction of ice and Gogurt.  The ice represented the brothers’ solidarity, composure and calmness, and the Gogurt represented a type of yogurt that is eaten on-the-go.  After seven weeks, Blue Man Group contacted me, stating that they had the matching bodies in good condition. A union and meeting place was agreed upon to reassemble the components.  Boomer and Adam, in their newfound and at the same time, original conditions, immediately went on to artistic victory, writing and creating films such as Troubadours and Salt Creek County. There were more conduits, though.

In 2006, I found Tahmus Rounds on the sepia-drenched, cooling dusk of a late September sunset.  Bossman and I had driven some nineteen hours from Texas in a Nissan, and he greeted us at the steps of an early 1970′s A-frame home.  He was without a shirt, but wearing decorated wings.  We embraced, agreeing upon common connections while two Springer Spaniels played at the base of the steps.  The sun went down, the quadrant was complete, and we quietly made inner blood pacts to create things whenever time allowed.

Under a ceiling of Hurricane Isaac’s spinoff storms, we recently spent an afternoon flirting with the ambiguous but tender relationship between two individuals, and taking advantage of access to a fully charged golf cart.

For this project, Johnson has decided to cut out the middleman and self-release the album direct to fans via Undertow Music/Thirty Tigers. Scorpion was recorded in the wooded outskirts of Denton, Texas, at the studio of longtime bandmate, producer and engineer Matt Pence.  Also lending their skills to Scorpion are multi-instrumentalists Scott Danbom (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, Sarah Jaffe), Howard Draper (Tre Orsi, Shearwater, Okkervil River) and Magnolia Electric Company’s Mikey Kapinus.

Unlike Centro-matic’s Candidate Waltz or Johnson’s last solo album Vultures Await (both of which were written well in advance and recorded using carefully conceived arrangements), Scorpion documents the genesis and germination of its songs. “A lot of them,” Johnson says, “Were written in the studio, right then and there, in the moment. I enjoy capturing those initial gut reactions in songwriting. It doesn’t always work, but when it does—you capture the song in such a raw, unique form.”

Johnson is hitting the road this fall in support of Scorpion, with his friend and New Multitudes collaborator, Anders Parker, playing a mix of traditional club shows and intimate acoustic living-room sets.

Tim Mooney 1954-2012

June 21, 2012

Tim Mooney has passed away.

He was a kind, humble, generous and incredibly talented human.

I had the pleasure of knowing Tim when I was working with American Music Club during their reunion a few years ago. To say I was star-struck is an understatement. I’ve been a huge AMC fan for all of my adult life. Mercury stands as one of my all-time favorite records. To be standing around backstage at a show with these guys was just about the weirdest thing I’ve ever experienced (in a good way). Tim made it a point to make me feel like I was family. He would call me often just to talk about music and old cars. Business was always secondary… Tim was a friend first.

I snapped this photo of Tim and Mark working on the set list just before a show at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in 2004.

I was out of touch with Tim for the last couple of years. But I thought about him often with great fondness and appreciation.

Deepest condolences to his family, friends, musical partners, and fans all over the world.

A fund has been set up to help Tim’s wife and daughter with expenses. Please give what you can if his talent touched your life.

Team Love RavenHouse Gallery in New Paltz, NY will present an exhibition of paintings by artist Will Johnson, entitled Every Player is a Star.  The exhibition opens June 23rd and continues through September 7th.  A reception will be held at the gallery on June 23rd from 4-6 pm.

Team Love RavenHouse Gallery eagerly anticipates a special show of paintings by Texas-based artist and musician Will Johnson. Johnson combines text and imagery in his work, gracing his compositionally bold portraits with hand-lettered stories of astonishing, often under-the-radar players and well-loved but now defunct places (his Dead Stadiums series).  Subjects featured in this show include Willie Wells, Salty Parker, Debs Garms, Dizzy Trout, Ruth “Tex” Lessing, Marie “Red” Mahoney, Alva Jo Fischer, Bill Buckner, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Burnett Field, Old Arlington Stadium, and Kokernot Field, among others.  The works are acrylic on medium density fiberboard, averaging 10”x24”.  Signed limited edition prints (with a run of 100) of a selection of his works will also be available for sale.

Johnson is a multifaceted artistic talent, who found his way to visual art through his love of baseball and his reverence for the game’s unsung hero. As a self-taught painter and musician, he is a wise and subtle storyteller, spotlighting details and turning the seemingly banal into the most powerful hook. He has participated in multiple group art exhibitions, with this being his third solo show.  He has worked on a farm, in maintenance, in comic book distribution, in a record store, in restaurants, as a teacher, delivering cars, transporting equipment, renting out tuxedos, making sandwiches, and cleaning up radioactive and mercury-contaminated waste.  He played pony league from the ages of six to twelve, and his earliest baseball memories center around the 1976 World Series.

Johnson’s career as a musician includes founding the bands Centro-matic and South San Gabriel. He has recorded and/or performed with Monsters of Folk, Son Volt, Jay Bennett, The New Year, The Drive-By Truckers and Jandek.  His most recent project is “New Multitudes,” a Woody Guthrie archival project that include Jim James, Jay Farrar and Anders Parker.

Subjects ranging from the well-known …to the virtually unknown… help Johnson curate the ultimate card collection in a larger, singular scale, while he shares a unique insight on the game that is often verbalized among fans, but rarely intimated in such fashion.
