The Rockets re-imagine and re-tool 13 songs from their vaunted catalog, including songs from albums long out of print. Look for it in the summer.

Here’s the skinny from the band:

“Although it may not be obvious, most Bottle Rockets songs are written on acoustic guitar. Contrary to being identified as a loud rock band, we enjoy the opportunities to perform without amplifiers and electricity. Songwriting is distinctly showcased under those stripped down conditions and requires the songs to sink or swim on their own. And on such occasions, we are always amused by the tangle of cords, plugs, and wires that are still involved with supposedly ‘unplugged’ music.

Choosing the right venue is important to the success of any show, and the Lucas School House in St. Louis was our correct choice for two sold out shows. Located on the edge of the historic Soulard neighborhood, the venue was formerly a one-room school built in 1898. The small, second floor gymnasium had been renovated into a concert hall with a beautiful wooden interior, stained glass, plush leather seating and state-of-the-art sound system. Serving as an ideal listening room during its short life, any performance in that space was an intimate music experience.

Recordings from those shows provide the material for this live album and the songs selected here include a mix of favorites, rarities, reinventions, and performances in-the-moment. Although the Lucas School House has since closed, this album preserves the essence of those two special nights.”

Centro-matic will be headed out on their first USA tour in a couple of years. Everyone is real excited to get back on the road and looking forward to seeing old friends and visiting some favorite towns.  They might even have time to see a baseball game somewhere.

The always amazing Sarah Jaffe will be with us on all the shows and we are joining our old friend, David Bazan for the show in Chapel Hill.

Will spent two days at Jim Eno’s house  back in February, and set up shop in his living room with some great mics, various guitars, and his wall piano.  They got six songs tracked and mixed in that time. Jim mixed it, Matt Pence mastered, and Dan Grissom/Sanctuary Print Shop has done the excellent letter-pressed sleeves.

Track list:

Little Raider
To Coupland Lines
One More Dreamer For The Summer
To Place Me On A Stone
Tangle For The Less
Devil On The Interstate Line

The EP is available now at shows and from the Undertow Store.

David Bazan’s new album Strange Negotiations will be released on Seattle’s Barsuk Records on May 24th, 2011. A North American tour in support of the record will begin June 1st in Salt Lake City, UT, and continue through mid July.

Bazan, the songwriter and driving force behind indie band Pedro the Lion, built a following and sold a couple hundred-thousand albums based in large part on his extraordinary melodic sense and erudite, theologically-themed songs. After a decade helming the project, Bazan found himself dealing with a crisis of faith and a growing drinking problem. Bazan got to work exorcizing both his demons and angels, producing two incredible pieces of work under his own name in the Fewer Moving Parts EP and the 2009 full-length Curse Your Branches.

Branches is considered by many to be a legitimate masterpiece, charting Bazan’s increasingly skeptical struggle with the precepts of the evangelical Christian world in which he was raised. NPR called it “an album of great music and great humanity.”

While Branches is intensely personal, Strange Negotiations focuses his energies toward the external, centering on his disappointment in the current state of accelerating American and global social fragmentation.

Strange Negotiations is the first full length Bazan has recorded with a band – the same band with which he toured relentlessly in support of Curse Your Branches – and the joy that he, Andy Fitts (bass), and Alex Westcoat (drums) take in playing these songs is beautiful.

Strange Negotiations track listing:

1. Wolves At The Door
2. Level With Yourself
3. Future Past
4. People
5. Virginia
6. Eating Paper
7. Messes
8. Don’t Change
9. Strange Negotiations
10. Won’t Let Go
