Bio and Discography

Matt is an accomplished musician as well as a producer, engineer, and mixer. As a drummer, Matt has played with Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, and Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), among others, and has toured globally. As a producer who's known for his "big drum sound," his credits include work with American Music Club, Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, Slowride, Ester Drang, and Cedell Davis (w/ Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey), as well as commercial music production for both Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort. While equally comfortable producing or engineering, Matt also loves to mix, and is particularly adept at creating sonically transcendent recordings.

Currently based out of his studio, The Echo Lab, near Denton, TX, Matt's disposition lends itself to creating the right environment for the artist or band to create their ideal sound. Matt has been the recipient of the Dallas Observer's "Producer of the Year Award" for the last 7 years.

Records he most admires include Matthew Sweet's "100% Fun" - it's a perfect example of how engineering can influence the production and set the tone so that you feel as if you're right there with the band; The Beatles "Revolver" - it's the first record where he noticed compression and especially its effect on the drum kit, thus creating a sound that jumped out of the speakers at people; and the original soundtrack for "Magnolia" - it's an album where the songs couldn't live without the production, and seem to literally be one in the same, thereby creating a seamless feel and unique sound. Other albums he's currently listening to include Snow Patrol's "Final Straw" and Solex's "The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock."

Matt's spent a majority of his summer on a European tour with Centro-matic/South San Gabriel, in support of Centro-matic's lauded new album, "Fort Recovery," and has just returned to The Echo Lab from a West Coast tour with Centro-matic. Their tour culminated with an extremely well-received performance at the Austin City Limits Festival this past September.
